You might be thinking, “Don’t you eat ramen (a kind of Japanese noodle) at Ajisen Ramen?” Ah, no I don’t. You know, Ajisen Ramen is a pretty famous restaurant that serves Japanese food and ramen. However, I do not order rament on most of my visit to the restaurant because I don’t really spend a lot of this. I feel like the food at Ajisen Ramen is a bit expensive and the cheapest I got is this Chicken Teriyaki Rice set @ RM12.90 with a Misou Soup. It’s better for me to avoid going into this Ajisen Ramen at Gurney Plaza because it’s always the taxes etc. GST and Service Charges that cause trouble to us.

As far as I know, the outlet in Gurney Plaza is the only one Ajisen Ramen in Penang. Talking back about the Chicken Teriyaki, it’s quite a nice one. Chicken is quite crispy and nice to bite with but then the portion maybe a little small to me. Tasted like a but sweet and salty and it’s a good try. I think I’ve tried it a couple of time. =)

This restaurant is always on the end of my eating list, when really no other choice only then we get in here. Hehe.

The first Ajisen Ramen in Malaysia is located at 1Utama PJ, Selangor. My house mate is the restaurant manager in Ajisen Ramen 1Utama. The most sought after dish in the restaurant is the Nan Katsu Ramen. (Pork Ribs Ramen) This ramen usually sold out during lunch time in 1Utama.

Forgo mouth watering pork bone soup ramen only to go for Kikkoman-marinated chicken on rice? Yeah that sounds like something a Malaysian would do: go for the familiar, which in this case is something that approximates your average Hainanese chicken on chicken stock-flavoured rice.

You really need to read up the wiki on ramen and its history to get a better grasp on the concept.

To note: Preparing the ramen soup properly takes from hours to days.

As for the “hawker stall” suggested by Criz Lai: seriously, there is nothing in the Japanese food menu that would sell for RM3. Trouble with Japanese food is that even the average roadside food fare, if there is such a thing, takes a lot of skill, preparation and most importantly experience to prepare. And it is “experience” that I don’t find in the 2 pictures you supplied in your blog. There is no “fried Japanese udon” or “teriyaki fried rice” that I know of.

Now, if you stumbled on a Japanese ramen stall that does hint at authenticity, I’d be most happy to try it out, even at an outrageous price of RM15 per bowl, as it would’ve saved me the walk/drive to Gurney Plaza, and having to put up with the Chinese pop songs in there.

(Ajisen Ramen was closed down the last time I visited due to Gurney expansion. My gut feeling says they might never reopen. I hope I’m wrong, as I have tried to look for alternative ramen stalls in Penang and came up empty.)

Ajisen Ramen here in Malaysia is expensive when those taxes comes in. I would like to see a better ramen shop here.
