There’s the local franchise OLDTOWN White Coffee and now there’s our Penang’s very own GEORGETOWN White Cofee. No, I’m not kidding. It’s opened in conjuction with the opening of Pacific Mall at KOMTAR and I thought it was OLDTOWN at first because they used the same font for their logo but it’s not, it’s GEORGETOWN!

IMG_9094 by you.

From the paper, this GEORGETOWN White Coffee cafe is known as the biggest store in Malaysia but then I have yet to know the others franchise or branch store for this. Anyway, the cafe is pretty and I was with KOKahKOK and MX, we wanted to have our lunch there but we had a bad first time experience there.

The cafe is huge but then first thing was the waiter didn’t come to us when we sit down. The foreign workers knew nothing about the menu and what they do were just clean up and serve the food. Person who take the menu was more likely a locals but then they walked slowly to us. I believe that they have not been well-trained.

Looking through the menu, I see that food are like OLDTOWN’s but with more Penang’s local food and price is of course not as cheap as at the kopitiam. I ordered a Rendang Chicken Rice and KOKahKOK ordered a Nasi Lemak.

The girl told us that the system in the cafe was down and food maybe served a bit late and they served us these kuih (worth RM4) for free. That’s fine when I heard that but then it took really very long, I even asked how long will it takes but then the waiter never came back to us.

What we really had was just the kuih and our beverages. 2 GEORGETOWN White Cofee and a GEORGETOWN Chocolate. White Coffee tasted like there’s a lot of milk, not that bad for it but then I didn’t try on the chocolate.

We were fed up with the long waiting time, they were not prepared for something like this,  maybe it’s new to them but they have to train their staff well. They were like walking slowly, everything was so relax. We canceled our food, paid for the drinks and walked away. Others did this too, because it was too long already.

KOK then wondered, what if we did not order any drinks but food, then they serve the kuih for free, we eat it, cancel our food, and run! Haha.

Hopefully, they will improve on everything, perhaps price too! I’ll apologize them for giving us free kuih. Another thing was, there’s no wifi provided in store.

friends and I went in the other day to try some of its signature dishes and beverages...i.e, Nasi Lemak, Char Koay Teow, Mee Mamak, Hokkien Mee, Curry Mee, the taste of all dishes are decent n delicious but when we tried char koay teow n mee mamak, the taste is so different than what we normally eat in hawker stalls...it's so YUMMY!!!...and most of all the ingredients GWC's cooked is fresh and the right amount...

the hot White Coffee and cold Rich Chocolate is definitely worth trying...it's much BETTER than the oldtown...

of coz need to try the ABC special n PG cendol...IT'S EQUALLY NICE too...

although the food is a bit heavy but it's definitely worth the price for the food and atmosphere...it's very relaxing with free WIFI facility....

GWC is fine for me. I work nearby and have my coffee there. I even have a favourite table. Have been trying quite a few of the dishes there, and most of them are delicious. Rojak is tasty, and the sauce is soooo thick. White coffee with toast and kaya is my favourite. I feel they are reasonably priced because the taste is good, and that is what matters most. As you said, the staff is rather slow in responding ( they are more interested in chit chatting and bantering among themselves - it works if I keep waving the order list above my head for a while. ;)

The white coffee & hot choc are quite decent, a bit different in taste but acceptable.

However, as the blog owner has stated, the service sorely needs improvement. I had an equally lousy first time at that place.

Criz, i doubt you are bron and bred from penang. real penangites are not stingy, only those "imported" from other states but resides in penang are. They bring their thrifty culture to penang. I can say this because i own a lot of business in Penang, and i can see the stats. Normally penangites is willing to buy a product if they really want it even if its expensive, but those outsiders will complain complain complain, but end up not buying anything. Try to ask any bosses you know, and see what i say is true or not. You can even ask some of the hawkers stall... :)

thts the typical penangite's phase...proud to be cheap!!!
  • LOL! Free food? That's not an excuse for not being really prepared for huge crowds.
