Last weekend, I went to join the kids sushi making class organized by Penang Foyi’s welfare group, a buddhist society here. I am not a kids but my friend was the organizer and she asked me to join in for fun and so I went. It’s held at Sushi King, Prangin Mall.

There’s like over 40 kids at there and everyone was so anxious about the class. I did sushi myself before but it was quite a failed one because I’ve forgotten to mix the vinegar with sugar and salt.

They thought us some simple Japanese term on food. Then rice mixing and the important part which people always forget is mix vinegar with sugar and salt. This is very important or else the rice would be tasteless. Pour vinegar on a mixing bowl or cup or anything, then add in sugar and salt. Don’t really need a lot, you can try the taste with your finger until and sweet and salty feel. Only then pour the mixed vinegar into your cooked Japanese rice.

We did have a little hands on. But only did 2 sushi. It’s for the kids and it’s not really a real hands on because they gave us rice that’s already shaped by machine and we only needed to wrap it with crabstick and nori sheet. And their nori sheet is nicely cut already, unlike what we bought from the supermarket.

Guess the best part of the day was having the little sushi bento and learning about mixing vinegar with sugar and salt. Haha. I’m gonna try it again at home because I failed last time. My sushi was pretty tasteless.

I am sure the kids did have a good time at there.

I am a fan of Abu Mamak Stall that’s located on Jalan Dato Koyah, somewhere turn in when you see Kayu on Penang Rd. Nightlife people might know about this place already and I love their Fried Maggi Mee a lot. Best. And recently, after posting a live post on awayfromcomputer.com, a reader intro me another mamak stall called Ali, but it’s not in town, it’s close to Pulau Tikus area right opposite PTPL college.

The stall is on the road side of a small lane, with tables and chairs placed on the pavement. I am not sure whether Ali or the owner opporate the stall legally or not. But seems so many people eat there, it’s not a problem already.

We didn’t know what’s famous. The Malay-Indian guy introduced us some food. There’s the susu lembu milo which literally is hot milk with Milo powder. It’s good because it’s hot and it’s RM2.20.

Then I ordered a Fried Maggi Mee, curious about how different is this with Abu’s. The serving look the same, in fact the egg is prettier and the chicken tasted different. The noodle has a garlic taste which Abu don’t have but I go for Abu’s. Why? Because Abu’s is cheaper, this one at Ali cost RM7.20! OMG. Expensive.

My friend ordered a Pattaya Fried Rice. As you know, Pattaya fried rice is a very standard thing, which is fried rice wrapped with egg. This is different because is fried by mamak and it tasted spicy to me and the rice is pretty dark, and wet. My friend say not nice, I felt quite not bad. Different people have different taste. If you like dark fried rice and spicy, this might be a good one for you.

Ali, went there before or not? Abu and Ali are so not related by the way.

I want to tell people that I went to clinic, to eat dinner. LOL. It’s the Clinic Cafe at Seberang Jaya, near to Sunway Carnival Mall. It’s more likely a themed restaurant with a hospital/clinic feel. I read about it in the newspaper and pretty curious about the place so I and some friends went to check it out. I believe there’s already one similar in Singapore’s Clarke Quay, but that’s more on drinking instead of meal.

It felt a little bit creepy to me when dining in there because, the waiter and waitress dress like a medical officer and it’s like dining in a clinic. Well, this is a simple one, the one in Clarke Quay, Singapore is more beautiful than this. We went there during dinner time but there’s like only 2 tables dining, include us. Pretty quiet. I think old chinese people wouldn’t want to eat here because of pantang.

After looking at the menu, the food is cheaper than I expected, but not very low price yet. It starts from RM7 and above, serving local oriental and some local western food.

I ordered the cheapest Tom Yam Fried Rice at RM7.80. They have put in a lot of spices and there’s tom yam taste but I dislike the spices, maybe some like it but not me. Don’t you feel creepy when eating rice in kidney bowl which use during surgery? Eww, haha.

My friend ordered the Yang Zhou Fried Rice, looks not bad, and tasted pretty good too. There’s lots of vegetable and forgot to mention that all our fried rice came with 4 crispy fried shrimp.

Oh shit, I’ve forgotten what my friend ordered for this beverage. It’s chocolate milk shake with vanilla ice cream if I am not mistaken, taste good, but RM5.80.

Arron, a good friend of mine treated us Chili’s last Friday and this is not a food review. It’s basically, food that we’ve ordered. The night was not concentrated on the food, but was about spending last crazy moment as he had went to Kuala Lumpur to further his studies.

Awesome eating place, awesome food, but bad outdoor environment because there’s loud speaker blasting off music in conjunction with World Cup 2010 which makes talking and communicating difficult.

I don’t really go Chili’s always, because of the pricing and I am a poor person, I need more sponsors. Haha. Everytime I go to Chili’s I ordered the same food, it’s either Fajitas or Quesadillas. This time I wanted to try something different and spent like 5-10 minutes looking at the menu and ordered a Firecrackers Fish Fillet. Wanted to try something different and picked their seafood.

So, let’s get into some food porn now. =D
Ok, here’s mine. Firecracker Fish Fillet. I tell you what, I don’t really like the taste of the rice. The fish is ok but not the rice, maybe it’s too western or what. Garlic rice is so much better IMO. The taste is, weird. I like fajitas more.

Looking at the photo, do you think it’s nice? Red Box is one of my favourite hang out place but I seldom have my meal there. Sometimes feel like killing a bird with two stone, save money for lunch and KTV at the same time, so I go there during lunch hour. But actually save nothing, cause after KTV, I will feel hungry again and go eat again.

So last week, I went to K Lunch, 11am-2pm, lunch was included and I ordered the Spaghetti with Minced Curry Chicken. To make it simple, it’s bolognese but curry sauce. Tasted very asian and oriental and myself favor the bolognese more. But it’s not bad afterall.

Last Sunday, parents and I went to Gurney Drive for lunch. We actually wanted to eat the Chinese seafood “cook fried” (just means Chinese food to us), but we were too early, so instead we ordered the Yam Rice for lunch. The stall owner is actually my dad’s friend and he asked us to try their yam rice out. Because of friend, so we went to try it out.

The yam rice is a little bit different with what I had before, it’s more light in color and there’s lots of yam. The taste was OK, perhaps I am not a fan of yam rice. It’s RM4 per bowl and sounds a little bit expensive.

Then there’s the vinegar pork leg. This is good, the pork leg were succulent and the soup was sour and sweet enough.

There’s also the assorted pork soup, cooked with pig’s intestine and meat ball. Tasted sour, not my favourite, but dad like it.

Overall, the food was not bad but the price were pretty not nice. Maybe it’s on Gurney Drive, the tourist area?

This Teochew Yam Rice is located in Public Cafe on Gurney Drive.

The famous Koay Teow Th’ng originally from Pitt Street is now at Carnavon Street. Actually it had been quite some times already but I am sharing with unknowns and this Koay Teow Th’ng place is where I often go there for brunch. Dad loves it here, so do I and mom.

Do you know Carnavon Street has various calling in local Penang Hokkien dialect? Some called it lam chan na (I have no idea what’s that means), some called kua cha keh 棺材街 (Coffin Street because there’s shops selling casket/coffin at there last time).

The koay teow th’ng shop is very easy to find because they have a big signboard outside with a big photo of the koay teow th’ng. So no worry of being lost.

The aunty there is the one who operate the stall and cook the koay teow th’ng. She’s a very friendly person.

I like the fish ball, it’s nice. There’s duck meat and also pork. The big slices of meat are pork, chopped. Kinda special and they koay teow submerged under the soup. Very nice.

Besides just ordering koay teow, we ordered only just the meat in the soup as extra one and eat for fun. Yummy. Koay teow although is similar to Ipoh’s Hor Fun, but the feeling and texture is definitely different. Personally like koay teow more.

This year’s Fathers’ Day, I brought dad to Sakae Sushi for lunch. Dad is not really a fan of western food and he only know local food and a little bit of Japanese food, and so, I brought him to Sakae Sushi at Gurney Plaza. Actually, it’s not planned. I just suggested to go there and eat and when the bill comes, SURPRISED, I payed for it, and it’s for my lovely daddy, and mommy and also myself. Haha.

Normal days, I wouldn’t go to Sakae Sushi because it’s expensive (to me) but every meal also very full one. Worth it or not, quite worth, but I didn’t have so much money all the time. Haha.

First up, one of our starter/appetizer. 6 slices of fresh raw salmon fillet. Yummy.

Another appetizer for me, taken from the belt is Unagi Sushi. =D I was so hungry so, I picked one from rotating belt.

Then here comes some main course. A combo of fried salmon fillet and teriyaki chicken, serve with steamed white rice. Mom and dad shared this.

Mine is Sakae Gozen. there’s a few dishes in the set. There’s Japanese curry chicken which is pretty good. There’s the cheesy scallop, two of them, and a fried salmon filled. Served with steamed rice and there’s miso soup and also chawan mushi too. It’s so much and I couldn’t finish my rice. Very full!

I love Japanese food, a lot! My teacher who went to Japan told me, once we tried the sushi in Japan, we will never want to eat the sushi here, because it’s too fresh at there. I’ve never been to Japan before, what do you think?

Most Penangite who love to eat sure knows about this place and the curry mee. Located in an old kopitiam on the corner, the kopitiam has a vintage feel as the owner love Chinese oldies.

The spiciness depends on how much curry paste you put in. Nothing much to review, I have to say, it’s good and nice.

Right across the city court, or right after Convent Light Street, on the corner of the junction of Green Hall and Light Street, there’s a new Hainanese, Old Town-style restaurant has just opened lately. I have no idea what that was before and I get to knew about it from my mom. How mom knows? From the newspaper. Hehe.

The place was not very big, there’s like 15 tables and their water making bar is open. The interior is pretty cool with warm lights and the place has free Wifi. Good for geek food hunter like me. 32 Light Street is also a Halal restaurant means you won’t find lard in cooking or pork in their menu.

After looking through their menu, there’s food similar to typical Old Town-liked kopitiam, but 32 Light Street has more variety and the food are more on Hainanese style. They have food like Hainan Chicken Rice, Hainan Fried Rice and etc.

Here’s my lunch, it’s a Fried Rice ala Hainanese stye. To be honest, it’s just normal fried rice to me, I didn’t know where the Hainanese style comes in. The presentation is good but the taste is just typical fried rice.

Here’s another food I’ve ordered that day for my lunch. Curry Chicken with Bread. This is pretty good, love the curry, there’s Hainanese style afterall, the curry is creamy type unlike Old Town’s which is kinda water-ish. The chicken was nice too, just one thing that makes it not perfect is the bread. The bread should be toasted or use bread which is softer, this bread is hard, not as in toasted hard, but as in, er… hard. Haha.

Lastly, here’s my dessert. Ai Yu Bing, a kind of tasty natural jelly. There’s rambutan, some little tapioca ball and even tiny ball that I didn’t know what’s that. It’s small and a little bit like caviar as when you bite on it, it pops. Nice. The Ai Yu Bing by 32 Light Street is so far different from what I had before at other places. The jelly is somehow softer, it’s not harden enough. Not bad though.

So, have you been to this place before? =)
