The famous Koay Teow Th’ng originally from Pitt Street is now at Carnavon Street. Actually it had been quite some times already but I am sharing with unknowns and this Koay Teow Th’ng place is where I often go there for brunch. Dad loves it here, so do I and mom.

Do you know Carnavon Street has various calling in local Penang Hokkien dialect? Some called it lam chan na (I have no idea what’s that means), some called kua cha keh 棺材街 (Coffin Street because there’s shops selling casket/coffin at there last time).

The koay teow th’ng shop is very easy to find because they have a big signboard outside with a big photo of the koay teow th’ng. So no worry of being lost.

The aunty there is the one who operate the stall and cook the koay teow th’ng. She’s a very friendly person.

I like the fish ball, it’s nice. There’s duck meat and also pork. The big slices of meat are pork, chopped. Kinda special and they koay teow submerged under the soup. Very nice.

Besides just ordering koay teow, we ordered only just the meat in the soup as extra one and eat for fun. Yummy. Koay teow although is similar to Ipoh’s Hor Fun, but the feeling and texture is definitely different. Personally like koay teow more.

Right across the city court, or right after Convent Light Street, on the corner of the junction of Green Hall and Light Street, there’s a new Hainanese, Old Town-style restaurant has just opened lately. I have no idea what that was before and I get to knew about it from my mom. How mom knows? From the newspaper. Hehe.

The place was not very big, there’s like 15 tables and their water making bar is open. The interior is pretty cool with warm lights and the place has free Wifi. Good for geek food hunter like me. 32 Light Street is also a Halal restaurant means you won’t find lard in cooking or pork in their menu.

After looking through their menu, there’s food similar to typical Old Town-liked kopitiam, but 32 Light Street has more variety and the food are more on Hainanese style. They have food like Hainan Chicken Rice, Hainan Fried Rice and etc.

Here’s my lunch, it’s a Fried Rice ala Hainanese stye. To be honest, it’s just normal fried rice to me, I didn’t know where the Hainanese style comes in. The presentation is good but the taste is just typical fried rice.

Here’s another food I’ve ordered that day for my lunch. Curry Chicken with Bread. This is pretty good, love the curry, there’s Hainanese style afterall, the curry is creamy type unlike Old Town’s which is kinda water-ish. The chicken was nice too, just one thing that makes it not perfect is the bread. The bread should be toasted or use bread which is softer, this bread is hard, not as in toasted hard, but as in, er… hard. Haha.

Lastly, here’s my dessert. Ai Yu Bing, a kind of tasty natural jelly. There’s rambutan, some little tapioca ball and even tiny ball that I didn’t know what’s that. It’s small and a little bit like caviar as when you bite on it, it pops. Nice. The Ai Yu Bing by 32 Light Street is so far different from what I had before at other places. The jelly is somehow softer, it’s not harden enough. Not bad though.

So, have you been to this place before? =)

Just now, I went to have my dinner at 三条路/Sa Tiao Lor/3 Road or known as Lebuh Presgrave. It was a plate of fried rice, dad said that it’s nice so he brought me there to try out. My parents had already had their dinner so it was only me eating there.

If you guys know about the famous Hokkien Mee that sells late at night, then you will know where this fried rice stall is located at. It doesn’t only sell fried rice, but also fried koay teow. The coffee shop where this stall is located at the junction of Gat Lebuh Presgrave and Jalan C.Y. Choy.

I got to say that it’s nice, it’s maybe because that I was hungry that time but seriously, it’s good. It’s fried with duck egg instead of normal chicken egg which makes the rice more frangrance. There’s also a little spicy taste in the rice but just nice. There’s no need of balachan to eat with because the taste of this is already good.

I like it. =)

Can you believe it? Last Sunday I went to 7 Road Market and it was my first time going to that place after so many years of living in Penang. Lebuh Cecil is more to be known as Qit Tiau Lor to the local or literally means 7th Road in English.

I was talking about food with my friends in school and one of them introduced me to try out the Duck Meat Koay Teow Thng. We got no idea where to eat for lunch on Sunday so I told dad, “Let’s go to 7th Road to eat Koay Teow Thng.” Dad droves us there.

Lebuh Cecil Market or 7th Road Market is a wet market with the food court behind the market. I was surprised to see there’s so many hawker stall at the food court. There’s so many choice of local hawker food to choose from and I didn’t know where to start. I told myself I will visit this place again and again.

First food to order was the Duck Meat Koay Teow Thng since everyone was telling me that it’s good. It’s not hard to try, you can easily spotted the big lighted stall with it’s lightbox on top.

Dad asked for extra ingredient. It’s all duck meat with duck’s blood too. I don’t like the duck blood but the meat is nice. I like the fishball too, it’s soft and I can say that it’s not from the supermarket. The soup is sweet enough but then the taste of pepper is a little bit strong. Lesser pepper powder will be good.

Mom’s lunch was a plate of Lam Mee. I didn’t try it because I am not a fan of Lam Mee. According to mom, she said it’s good as there’s so many ingredients.

Dad loves Pasembur, we did order a plate to try out too. Pasembur is a kind of local Indian salad with shreded cucumber, turnip, potatoes, beancurd, bean sprouts, prawn fritters. The prawn fritters were crunchy enough but somehow dad says Taman Free School’s is better.

Lastly, we got a bowl of Fu Zhou Fish Ball Soup. If you do not know what this is, this is actually a bowl of fish ball in soup with tang hoon. The fish ball is different from the Koay Teow Thng’s fish ball as this has meat in the balls and it’s huge too. The soup is sweet and this is better than Taman Free School’s though. Hehe.

There’s so many stall of hawker food and I’ll go and try other next time. Any recommendation from those who have visited before? =)

This visit to Karaikudi North and South Indian Food Restaurant was actually my first proper Indian food meal. I had once tried Indian food at Spice and Rice (closed down) which was a very simple one and another one was at Sri Ananda, this was more to local style Indian food.

I am glad that I was invited to be part of the food review session with other food blogger. This had given me an opportunity to know more about Indian food and also a chance to taste it because there’s no one at home is interested in Indian food except me. I like eating food of different places. =)

Karaikudi Restaurant serves North and South Indian Chettinad Cuisine. Chettinad is actually a part in the south of India and Karaikudi is the capital of Chettinad. Chettinad cuisine is more likely south Indian food but Karaikudi serves both north and south Indian food. The difference between north and south is way of cooking and the different spices use. From what I’ve known, south Indian food is more spicy than north’s.

Let’s into the food part. We got a few starters to try out. First, we got this Vegetable Soup (RM3.00) It’s a homemade vegetable soup cooked in Chettinad style. It’s not like any of the Western’s soup which is very creamy, this is not. At the bottom of the soup, you’ll find a lot of vegetable cutlets and be sure to drink it when hot, it’s not good when it is cooled.

This Bitter Gourd Chips (RM6.00) is something that caught my interest. It look like potato chips to me, it’s just that the colour it not same, but it does tasted crispy. It’s sliced bitter gourd marinated with spces and de-fried. The bitter gourd pieces were really fine cut until very thin, it’s pretty. First bite is a little salty and later you will taste the bitterness after a while. For me, it’s not very bitter, I like bitter gourd.

Chicken Cutlet (RM6.00) is something that looks like chicken nugget but after you got the first bite, you will know it’s nothing feels like a chicken nugget that you eat in McDonald’s or KFC. It’s actually boneless pieces of chicken marinated with egg and bread crumps and then deep fried. The meat is soft. It’s better to dip it in ketchup.

Squid Fry (RM8.00) is another deep fried dish. It’s just squid fish dipped in spicy batter and de-fried. It tasted a little bit Indian but it’s still squid afterall, maybe it’s my type of food, it just feel simple to me. But if you are a squid lover, you should order this to try out. =)

Here comes something more familiar which is the Chicken Briyani (RM9.50). The rice used is not like any of our local rice, it’s basmathi rice and is cooked with spices. Hiding under the rice is a piece of drum stick. You can try eating it with the curry chicken sauce so that it wouldn’t feel so dry. Another thing is, there’s an egg served on top of the rice.

Naan is another food that I believe some of you guys know what it is. This is their Kashmiri Naan (RM6.00) with dry fruit stuffed in it which is famous among the kids. You should aware that this tasted sweet and it’s better not to eat with any sauce because you won’t taste any dried fruit afterall. There’s dried coconut in various colour in the between the Naan.

Looking at the photo of above dish, I think you got no idea of what it is. I didn’t know at first too only after the man introduced it to us. It’s Chicken Kothu Paratha (RM9.00) which is their prata bread cut into very small pieces and cooked with chicken.

This colourful dish is what they called the “Indian Pizza” which is just a nickname for it. It’s nothing feel and taste like pizza. The real name for this dish in their menus is Chettinad Special Dosai (RM4.00). It’s very thin and with assorted vegetable mainly chopped coriander, onions, potato, chili flakes on top which made it looks colourful. Eat it when it serves so that it’s wouldn’t turn un-crispy after some times.

Next, we got some little dishes that serves well with rice or naan or perhaps eat-for-fun.

The above is Ladies Finger Pepper Fry (RM7.00) I like the crunciness of this vegetable after it’s fried. The ladies finger is sliced into tiny peices and saute with pound black pepper. Tasted a little bit spicy not you won’t feel hot.

Chettinad Potato Masala (RM6.00) is cybes of potata saute with special masala. A very simple sweet vegetarian dish and good to serve with the naan.

I like eggs. The Egg Podimass (RM4.00) is good. I don’t know why it is called Podimass but it’s just scrabled egg cook with onion, salt and pepper. There’s also tiny cut chilli so you might spicyness if you get a bite on the little cut chilli.

Kadai Vegetable (RM9.00) is assorted vegetable cook with rich gravy.

Here’s something spicy, to some food blogger there, it’s spicy; but to me, it’s not. Hehe. This is Mutton Chukka Varuval (RM18.00). I got no idea what it means, I only know the word, mutton. It’s diced mutton saute with chettinad spices. People told me lamb is smelly but in this dish, the smell is not very strong, in fact the smell of spices and pepper covered over it.

Coming to the end. We got a coffee and sizzling brownie as desserts.

Let’s start of with the sizzling brownie (RM10.00) first. I got to say that it’s delicious and I like it a lot. However it makes my cloth smelly because of the sizzling oil spilled into the air. It’s not an Indian food but their very own recipe with freshly baked chocolate brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate suace and cashewnut served on hot sizzling plate. You taste something special when you put it into your mouth as one part is very hot and another part is very cold. Eat fast or the ice cream melts fast.

Next is a small cup of Chettinad Coffee (RM2.80). Fresh coffee bean powder and steamed with boiled water to prepare a decoction and added fresh milk. It’s not coffee like any of our Old Town, Georgetown or local Kopitiam, it’s Chettinad style, that what I can say. Taste nice to me too, I don’t really know how to describe a coffee, but it’s good. One thing to say is, the taste of milk in the coffee is heavy.

The restaurant is a halal restaurant and what makes is so special is that 95% of the spices are from India. There’s another branch at Hillside, Tanjung Bungah but you will get a difference experience here at the Market’s Street outlet. It’s worth trying out if you like Indian food or if you have not try any Indian food before, you can check this place out. =)

There’s the local franchise OLDTOWN White Coffee and now there’s our Penang’s very own GEORGETOWN White Cofee. No, I’m not kidding. It’s opened in conjuction with the opening of Pacific Mall at KOMTAR and I thought it was OLDTOWN at first because they used the same font for their logo but it’s not, it’s GEORGETOWN!

From the paper, this GEORGETOWN White Coffee cafe is known as the biggest store in Malaysia but then I have yet to know the others franchise or branch store for this. Anyway, the cafe is pretty and I was with KOKahKOK and MX, and we had our lunch thre.

Looking through the menu, I see that food are like OLDTOWN’s but with more Penang’s local food and price is of course not as cheap as at the kopitiam. I ordered a Rendang Chicken Rice and KOKahKOK ordered a Nasi Lemak.

The girl told us that the system in the cafe was down and food maybe served a bit late and they served us these kuih (worth RM4) for free. That’s fine when I heard that but then it took really very long, I even asked how long will it takes but then the waiter never came back to us.

What we really had was just the kuih and our beverages. 2 GEORGETOWN White Cofee and a GEORGETOWN Chocolate. White Coffee tasted like there’s a lot of milk, not that bad for it but then I didn’t try on the chocolate.

We were fed up with the long waiting time, they were not prepared for something like this, maybe it’s new to them but they have to train their staff well. They were like walking slowly, everything was so relax. We canceled our food, paid for the drinks and walked away. Others did this too, because it was too long already.

KOK then wondered, what if we did not order any drinks but food, then they serve the kuih for free, we eat it, cancel our food, and run! Haha.

Hopefully, they will improve on everything, perhaps price too! I’ll apologize them for giving us free kuih. Another thing was, there’s no wifi provided in store.

UPDATE: The cafe improves a lot since opening.

This is a old cafe hidden in one of the tiny lane in the heart of Georgetown. The specialities of what the cafe serves are the bread with kaya and butter, half boiled egg and kopi. That’s all for the cafe, it’s a local breakfast. Though, I had it for brunch today.

The little cafe is located right opposite this shop lots at the head of Campbell Street.

Toh Soon Cafe is the name. This has already been around for quite some years and this was my first visit to me. Thanks to mom for taking me here.

There’s nothing much you can order. It’s just bread with butter and kaya paste but there’s a variety of bread to choose from. What they have today were hainan bread, chocolate bread and coffee marble bread. It’s either steam or toasted and then put on some kaya paste and butter on it.

Try out some local Kopi Peng (Ice coffee with condensed milk), it’s quite nice.

There’s the half boiled egg. One that they are using just normal eggs instead of Omega3 eggs like in Old Town.

Here comes the bread. First up was Hainan bread, with kaya and butter inside. The bread was steamed so that it’s soft when it’s eaten. It’s not nicely served so the bread in the photo is a little bit ugly but it’s nice to eat.

Then we got chocolate bread and coffee marble bread with the same thing inside.

My personal favourite is still the hainan bread beacuse its softness.

If I’m not mistaken, they sell until mid afternoon. So you can have your afternoon tea there too.

Click here to the map to Toh Soon Cafe.

In the heart of Georgetown, you can actually find a lot of nice food. One of which is a little stall in a little kopitiam that does fried related food like fried rice, fried Hainan noodle, fried hor fun and fried yin yeung.

I never know there’s nice fried rice in Penang until this visit to this little kopitiam (cafe) on Kimberley St (Lebuh Kimberley).

That’s the front of the coffeeshop kopitiam Yik Kheng Kee, the little stall is where the uncle does his fried (food).

We ordered 2 food, a plate of fried rice and fried hor fun. First up was fried hor fun (char hor fun), it’s not yin yeung (hor fun and bee hoon), but just hor fun. It’s quite nice, but a bit little. The egg is waterish or not well-cooked so that the gravy has a little bit of taste of egg. There’s prawn, a little bit of vegetable and hor fun itself.

Then the fried rice comes. It took quite some times like 15 minutes for the fried rice to be serve. Guess there’s a lot of people ordering it. The rice is nice, not very soft, and it’s not dark fried rice as you can see. Different fried style.

Well, I’ll say that I will visit this place again, cheap and good place for lunch.

I think a lot of Penangite has already know about this famous hai nan chicken rice in town, Wen Chang’s Chicken Rice. It is located in the heart of Penang on Cintra Street. This chicken rice shop has gone on to papers and magazine before and my dad is a frequent visitor but not me.

This lunch visit, I got my camera with me and I am gonna share with you some chicken. =)

First up, they bring you the soup, it’s free (with order of chicken rice).

Then is the side dishes that dad order.

On the left we got chicken feet cooked with mushroom, different from what you eat at dim sum, dim sum’s is softer and hotter. This is not a bad one.

Right are lobak and some chicken’s organ etc liver and don’t know that the other is. I don’t really eat it, I eat lobak. Though the lobak is not very nice because it don’t have a crispy skin.

White chicken and black (roasted) chicken. One word, nice, but then what I tried in Bangkok and Singapore seems better, different cooking style I guess and different places, different taste.

In this post, I guess it will be more food pr0n then my personal review on the food. It was a food blogger gathering last night at this nice little Swiss restaurant/cafe named Edelweiess. It was my first time having meal there at Edelweiss. I read about this restaurant in the papers and other food blogs and wanted to visit it for a long time and the chanced is given. Thanks to Lingzie for organizing such a nice gathering for the food blogger.

Edelweiss is a swiss restaurant-cum-cafe with a nyonya interior feel located on the heritage street, Armenian St (Lebuh Armenian). It wouldn’t be hard looking for the restaurant, the street is short and look for a little swiss flag hanging outside and that’s Edelweiss.

Let’s get into some food, shall we?

Appetizer/Starter

First up, we got a soup and some bread for appetizer or starter. It’s a pumpkin soup and tasted sweet. It’s not really that creamy, but it’s a good try. I think it would be nice if it’s creamier. I love creamy soup.

Breads! We got garlic toast and a lots of onion and cheese topping bread. I like the onion one because there’s cheese on top.

Main Course

That’s a huge smoked pork sausage. Sorry that it’s non-halal because it’s pork. I would love to try that.

It’s about pork for the whole night with a exception of lamb. Above is a smoked pork belly. There’s the fat and the non-fat part. Wonder what will it taste like at of the skin and fat part. The worm-liked is actually mashed potato, don’t worry, it’s nice.

A little pork rib served with french fries and salad. French fries seems to be more than the mashed potato. But what were we being there is to taste food. =) When stomach goes full, you won’t feel comfortable.

The only non-pork main course among alls. It’s a roast leg of lamb. Seems nice, but I don’t really like to eat lamb. There’s always smell.

The double curry pork sausages. It’s two huge sausages with sweet chilli sauce and curry powder as topping. I’ve tried it and I like it more than my Gammon Ham below. The curry powder is not that spicy but as a Chinese (Chinese loves spicy food), exchanging the curry powder with the dried chilli powder, I think it will be hot.

Here comes my Gammon Ham with onion gravy as topping. Yes, it’s my first time trying this food. I’ve never ate it elsewhere before. It’s a thick pork ham with it’s skin on and served with worm-liked delicious small mash potato and salad. The ham is hard to cut but then I eventually ate all of it. I didn’t even bother about the fat skin. I just gotto do more exercise for now.

I ate it with some mustard and well, the same thing I got to say is, it’s hard (to cut).

Desserts

We got a apple flan and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. There’s apple and there’s egg. Like it. It’s different from apple pie, it’s not hot and because the existence of egg makes it taste, special (to me).

I forgot to talk about the price, it’s a little high for the pricing. But then it’s a good place to eat out. once in a while it would be good. Nice environment, little bar and wifi zone. Good place I’d say.
