Queensbay Mall is a place where you can find a various of restaurant for you meal. There’s 2 Hong Kong food restaurant in Queensbay Mall, one is Kim Gary and another is Canton-i. If you may have not know, Canton-i is brought to you buy the same company of the famous Shanghai’s Siao Long Bao restaurant, Dragon-i.

I love Chinese Hong Kong food a lot and recently I’ve been there with my family. I didn’t know where it was at first until I asked from the lady at the information counter and then she guided me to it. It’s located on the ground floor on the North Zone of the mall.

Before coming here, I read some reviews online and heard about friends talked about it, most of their comment were about the price, it’s indeed a little bit expensive comparing to other Hong Kong food restaurant.

We ordered egg tart. There’s 4 of us, but there’s only 3 tarts. The filling is hot when it’s served. The side of the tart was not crispy enough though. The sweetness is just right but then I’ll say it’s still not the best egg tart in town yet. You can try this and tell me what do you think.

This is a plate of Roasted Pork / Siu Yok (Cantonese) / Sio Bak (Hokkien) / Shao Rou (Mandarin) and roasted duck. The roasted pork is nicely cut and the skin at the top part of the meat is crispy though this taste a little bit salty. A dip in mustard taste good. As for the roasted duck, I like this more than the roasted pork because the roasted pork still lose to the one at Crystal Jade Kitchen (it’s just my 2 cents).

2 must ordered dim sum at every restaurant that has dim sum in their menu are the Har Kao 虾饺 and Siu Mai 烧卖. Har Kao is Chinese dumplings fill with shrips while Siu Mai is also dumplings but with chopped shrimp and ground pork fillings. I seriously don’t like the idea of serving 3 Har Kaos with the price of RM9 per plate which mean RM3 per Har Kao. This indeed sounds expensive.

Let’s not talk about the price for a moment and back to the food. It’s a little bit salty which makes me felt thirsty after eating it. The shrimp is huge enough in Har Kao and surprisingly the Siu Mai too has big shrimp. Though, I just had that say that they’re “so-so” only. The taste just haven’t make feels like it’s bombastic and superb. Hehe.

Some other foods that we ordered were the Yao Choy 油菜, mixed noodle combo of roasted pork and wan tan and a wan tan noodle.

Yao Choy is always our favourite dish and will-order when we’re at a Hong Kong food restaurant, it’s also known as the Asian cabbage. However this Yao Choy tasted a little bit light, I suggest more oyster sauce should be added while cooking. Hehe. As for the Wan Tan, it’s good so do the noodle. The noodle is crisp and it’s not like any noodle in the street here. The mixed combo is just the same noodle but it’s serves dried with the roasted pork and a bowl of 2 Wan Tans.

One thing I don’t like was that we payed the service tax but we still have to go to the counter to do our billing. I don’t like this. Sorry that I have to say that I prefer Crystal Jade Kitchen than this. Though, it’s good to see such a nice restaurant in Penang. I suggest that price of food should be lowered too. Hehe. What do you think?

Canton-i is at Queensbay Mall North Zone.

Today I want to bring you overseas to Hong Kong, to a restaurant that’s operate by my auntie and her family in Kowloon Peninsula of Hong Kong. The restaurant name is called Pak Lam Restaurant and located at Tai Tsun St 大全街 of Tai Kok Tsui 大角嘴 area. You may not know where I am talking about but please allow me to show you some nice food of my auntie’s restaurant.

My auntie is on my mom side and they are all Hainanese. So one of their famous food in the restaurant is the Hainan chicken rice. A set of this consist of vegetable, which very nice to me, soup, chicken and a big bowl of rice. I don’t know whether rice in Hong Kong is it very cheap, they tend to give customer a lot of rice. The chicken rice is different from here, the rice is a little bit hard, not so soft and a little bit oily, but it’s still nice.

Chicken Chop and Steak with white rice and a little bit of vegetable. Hong Kong loves chop a lot, pork chop, chicken chop, beef chop (steak). However, there’s too little vegetable for me.

Beef noodle. The beef is nice, but the noodle is not. It’s not the cooking is not delicious, it’s just that I don’t this type of noodle and that’s why. Beef is quite famous in Hong Kong by the way.

When you are going to Hong Kong, there’s a dessert shop that you must visit and it is Hui Lao Shan 许留山 (mandarin:xu3 liu2 shan1; cantonese:hoi2 lao3 shan4). It’s a very famous desert chain store in Hong Kong and you can find it at a lot of places in Hong Kong.

What they are famous for is their mango smoothy. A lot of mango cutlet, has a mango flavoured ice cream and taste very sweet.

Here’s a bird nest with coconut milk. It’s hot and not that bad. However, it taste more coconut then bird nest. I prefer ordering the fruit based dessert.

This is the carrot cake in XO sauce and I got to tell you that I like this so much. Delicious but then it’s small in portion. I have ate it twice when I was in Hong Kong few months back.

Lastly, we did try another light dish and it is the curry beef offal 牛杂 (cantonese:ngao3zhap2). It taste too much of curry powder and I still like the XO carrot cake more than this.

Price of dessert and food is like 15HKD-50HKD, and yet there’s still a lot of people visit the shop. This means that they are real good. Remembered there’s a Hui Lao Shan in Singapore few years ago but then it has closed down now.

Must visit, must go when you go to Hong Kong.

It will be great if someone franchise it in Malaysia.

After a trip to Hong Kong, only now I realized that the people there loves to eat instant noodle. Almost every char chan then (their coffeeshop) serves instant noodle. The most famous and favourite of all is the instant noodle with beef and eggs or sometimes sausages. We call it Maggi/Cintan Mee here where they call theirs Gong Zai Mee (公仔面）.

A bowl of above noodles cost about HK$15. We were too hungry that time and we got no time to look for restaurants at Central already, and so we just went to the little food stall at the roof top of Queensway Plaza. Surprisingly, the place is filled with working people during tea time. It’s either noodle or buns, and I ordered a beef noodle. Never knew that it’s those instant noodle until it have been served. If it’s just plain noodle, it will not be good, but with beef and eggs, not bad.

Maybe it is the hectic life in Hong Kong, so that everything must be fast and so instant noodle it is. Taking too much of instant noodle is not good by the way.

One of the must-eat street food in Hong Kong is the curry fish balls. It’s so famous in Hong Kong and you happens to see it at a lot of places selling on a stall or shop by the roadside. I didn’t know much about what to eat in Hong Kong after my brother who went there earlier and told me about all the nice foods. Now, it’s my turn to tell you guys.

The curry fish balls is actually just a fish balls on a stick which you then dip it into the provided hot curry sauce. Well, it’s curry but it’s not that spicy as our local curry. It taste so much different with our curry, it’s like taste of curry powder and that’s all. Not authentic curry with a lot of cooking ingredient though. Selling for like a stick with 4-5 balls at around HK$10, it’s cheap.

The one above was at Times Square area and also I had tried another one near to our hotel at Pitt St, Yau Ma Tei. They taste almost the same, just the size of the balls were different.

So during your visit to Hong Kong, look out for it at the road side. Don’t be surprise to see working people in tuxedo standing there eating fish balls, it’s so common there where a group of students, peoples in uniform standing by the road side eating street food.

It’s pretty famous in Hong Kong. It’s always full housed there but I don’t see the crowds here in Malaysia. In Singapore, sometimes.

So many times of visit to Yoshinoya, I have never change my order before. Every time is the same famous Beef Bowl. It’s selling for about RM9 for a beef bowl and a soft drink while around RM15 for additional soup, a pudding and a salad.

Maybe during my next visit to Kuala Lumpur, I’ll order other food at Yoshinoya, but I miss the Beef Bowl! Wonder when will the first outlet to be open in Penang?

Back in Hong Kong few months ago, I manage to make a visit to one of the Starbucks Coffee. I prefer Starbucks Coffee over Coffee Bean for its nice ice blended coffee and latte too. In Malaysia, people tends to go to Starbucks Coffee to get on the free wifi Internet connection which doesn’t available at Coffee Bean.

Sadly, there isn’t any free Wifi connection provided by Hong Kong’s Starbuck Coffee. Surprisingly, you will not find any Coffee Bean there. It’s just Starbucks Coffee and Pacific Coffee.

During a visit to Repulse Bay, I dropped by at the Starbucks Coffee to buy some food for myself. I did not buy any hot coffee, since we were in the move, I got myself a bottled Frappuccino coffee. I got to say that this is a nice cool drink, you can’t find it in Malaysia, yet or never. I don’t know about it.

Oops, I have forgotten to take down the name of this roll. It’s like an egg roll wrapping with cheese and ham. It taste good, but a little a bit expensive for something that small. Though, it’s just EAT-FOR-FUN. HA!

One thing, Starbucks Coffee outlet in Hong Kong is not as much as we had in Kuala Lumpur.

I learnt about this Stinky Tou Fu or known as Chao Tao Fu in Cantonese from those Hong Kong TVB series. Back to my first Hong Kong trip few months ago, I was in search of some exotic nice Hong Kong food and one of these I found was the Stinky Tou Fu.

Just plain looking at the Tou Fu from the television, I imagined that it smells like rotten cheese or sometimes the smell of a shit. Food critic in the TV keep talking how delicious it is, how nice it is very placing it into the mouth makes me tempted to try it in Hong Kong.

I was walking along Mong Kok area at the Kowloon peninsula in the night and on of the street by the roadside, I found a stall. It should be I smelled a stall. A food stall that gives out a strong smell of I-don’t-know-how-to-describe, it’s very strong, smell of rotten food. It attracted me to go and take a look.

I tell myself I gonna buy the stinky tou fu and have a try. It’s not expensive though, it’s only 10HK$ for 2 pieces of it. Placing it in a soft paper bag, with a few toothpick or sticks for you to eat it. You wouldn’t want to eat it with your hand because it’s pretty oily. Dip it into some sweet sauce and eat it.

It was not just the tou fus were selling there. They have plenty of foods around. Fish balls, sausages, not stinky tou fu, pig’s head skin, etc etc. Most of them are deep fried.

Personal thoughts is I don’t like the Stinky Tou Fu. Smells is not that bad but very strong sense of it, it’s maybe I didn’t put a lot of sauce on it, which eventually tasted very salty.

If there’s a second chance for me to visit Hong Kong, I’ll definitely remember to dip in more sauce for it.
